Ask Us (About Eastleigh)
Eastleigh Weather
Eastleigh is situated between Winchester and Southampton in Hampshire. It was the birth place of many mighty Southern steam locomotives and the scene of the Spitfire’s inaugural flight in 1936. Eastleigh’s Market Street was made famous by Benny Hill, comedian and one-time milkman of Eastleigh, in his 1971 song Ernie, The Fastest Milkman In The West!
Other famous Eastleigh residents have included people as diverse as:
Noel Croucher, founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and millionaire philanthropist, was born in a terraced house in High Street in 1891.
Tommy Green (b 1894), Gold medal winning race walker at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, lived and worked in Eastleigh.
Colonel Sir Arthur Edwin Young, KBE, CMG, CVO, KPM Commissioner of the City of London Police, 1950 to 1971, was born in Chamberlayne Road in 1907.
Chrystabel Leighton-Porter, the model behind World War 2 cartoon character Jane, was born here in 1913.
Vince Hawkins, British Middle Weight boxing champion 1946 to 1948, worked at Eastleigh’s locomotive Shed.
Heinz Burt, Musician, was raised in Eastleigh from age 7 and was employed at the Railway Works at one time.
Scott Mills, Radio 1 DJ/presenter, was raised in Eastleigh and attended Crestwood Community School.
Colin Firth, Oscar winning actor, was a student at Barton Peveril 6th Form College.
Wikipedia lists 18 significant people to come from the Eastleigh area.
In 2006, Channel 4’s Best and Worst Places to Live put Eastleigh in 9th place (from the top!). Their survey gave it 4 out of 5. That’s not bad, but they did call the town “Ugly!”
